Discovering the mysterious Micronesian ruins of Nan Madol

Ruined city of Nan Madol on Pohnpei (Ponape), Federated States of Micronesia

A few days on mountainous, tropical Pohnpei, formerly a U.S. territory, can be highly recommended, if you can find your way there.

My partner and I were able to do so in 1999-2000 through the good offices of Air Nauru, now branded as Nauru Airlines with services ex-Brisbane connecting to Pohnpei and other Pacific Islands.

Most tours to Nan Madol incorporate a picnic on one of the coral islands which dot the fringing reef around Pohnpei (Ponape), Federated States of Micronesia

Roughly equidistant between Brisbane, Honolulu and Manila, just beyond the equator, Pohnpei is the hub of the Federated States of Micronesia.
